MSI Wind touch screen install

Time for our second touch screen install tutorial and this time we’re going to use the MSI Wind. As you may or may not already know the MSI Wind comes in many other brand names other than MSI. For this tutorial we’re going to use the Advent 4211. The touch screen we used was supplied by www.fidohub.com who are based in Taiwan. So far we’ve used two of their touch screens and both times everything has been superb.  Hoda Technology/Fidohub were also featured on the MSNBC Top 10 Gifts for the hard-core techie and we are confident we are fitting a quality component.

You can buy the touch screens direct from fidohub, we were supplied with a Fed Ex shipping number so we could trace every step of the parcel’s journey and shipping only took a few days from Taiwan to the UK.. Continue reading »

OK guys, thing’s have been really really quiet here at Netbookmag due to various reasons, we’re sure you could tell by the lack of recent post’s.

Well it’s time for us to get stuck in again and what a better way to start than cracking open an Msi Wind/4211/Akoya mini and perform some sort of step by step upgrade operation.

The memory upgrade tutorial seemed to hit the right note with readers so what so you want to do next?

The options in the polls are to upgrade the hard drive to a larger one.

Upgrade the WiFi card, perhaps you want a draft N card?

Install OS X Leopard for all you MAC lovers. (note: this will also involve upgrading the WiFi card as the stock card does not work with OS X)

Something else? Let us know what you fancy doing next to your machine and we will certainly take all requests on board.

Advent 4211

Yahoo! Noooo not the search engine, but the Yahoo as in “Hurrah”, “Yeehaaah” and “Yessss”, why the cheers? As you will probably be aware the MSI Wind is due to be stocked on UK shelves sometime in the very near future but why would you want to wait and even more to the point, why pay more?

Remember our unboxing photo-shoot of the Advent 4211? Those that do will know that the 4211 is a MSI Wind with an Advent badge on it, not only that but it’s also a good £50 cheaper.

Soon after our photos were released the Advent 4211 went flying off the shelves and stock became like hen’s teeth to find apart from the odd chancer selling them on eBay for £50+ above the R.R.P. Good news though, PC World have them back in stock for both collect in store and home delivery. If your going to buy one then why not think about the memory upgrade while you have you wallet open. Our easy to follow Advent 4211 Memory upgrade tutorial can be found HERE.
We had a few of the 4211’s lying around our office which were promptly claimed by staff and 9 out of 10 NetbookMag.com staff say they prefer the 4211 to any other netbook they have used. The scariest thing of all is i agree with them. Go grab one before they all go again and let us know your thoughts on the machine. DIRECT LINK

With my current laptop slowly dying and getting fed-up of lugging a 3Kg weight around wherever I go, I thought it was time to find a replacement that was both lighter and easier to carry about.

Having followed the latest news on various forums and websites about the new “Netbooks”, I started researching the various makes with a view to buying one. I was surprised to find how many manufacturers were suddenly bringing out models of what used to be called Ultra Mobile PC’s with Dell, MSI, Acer, Asus and HP amongst the frontrunners. MSI Wnd all 3

MSI’s own netbook, the Wind, has managed to crawl into some stores around the world this week but the first batch of units all have a 3-cell battery, and this applies to both Windows XP and Linux equipped models.

The Intel Atom powered Wind U100 Continue reading »

OK, most of you will be aware that the Advent 4211 which is basically a re-badged MSI Wind is only available HERE

We have our hands on one and we are well impressed with it so far. Want to make one of the best even better? Read on…

Here’s a simple step by step tutorial showing you how to upgrade the memory in your Advent 4211 (MSI-Wind).

*** WARNING ***

Opening your netbook may invalidate you warranty, although to date we haven’t had a reply from Advent confirming this we thought we better point this out. MSI have stated that upgrading the RAM will invalidate your warranty, we’re not quite sure why though nor are we quite sure how they could tell as there are no void if broken type stickers anywhere on the 4211.

OK, all you need for this is a small Phillips / cross head screw-driver, a suitable stick of memory and your Advent 4211 / MSI Wind.

01 - All you need

We bought a stick of PNY SODIMM PC2-5300 DDR2 memory from PC World at a reasonable price and it came with a nice 10 year guarantee that will no doubt out-live the machine it was destined for. Here’s a picture of what we got. [Edit] We’ve found some Cheaper ram at Play.com Continue reading »

We were lucky enough to get our hands on the new Advent 4211 netbook today so we thought we would share the un-boxing of the unit so you can see for your self.
What the heck is an Advent 4211 netbook we hear you cry, well, to put it plainly it’s a MSI Wind that has been re-badged. We haven’t had the time to give it a full hand’s on review yet but expect one soon.
Last time we looked, the Advent 4211 was available all over the UK at PC World stores for reserve and collect or home delivery. Best of all it’s around £40 / $80 cheaper than the branded MSI Wind.

Enjoy the flicks. Continue reading »

A nice video for those that wanted to see the MSI Wind, Asus Eee 901 and the Acer Aspire One side by side.

This compares the keyboard sizes as well as the physical size of each unit. Thanks to Julian Prokaza @ MobileComputer.

Wind NetbookMSI

What a day tomorrow is going to be!

MSI will be one of the major elements that adds to the excitement with the UK release of the much awaited MSI Wind netbook. Strategically or coincidentally both MSI and Asus unleash their much anticipated netbooks to the UK public.

Who’s going to come out on top? Asus with their netbook pedigree or MSI with one of the most talked about netbook’s since they announced it. We wait with baited breath but we have a hunch which netbook is going to come out on top. The poll’s have the MSI Wind as the current fav whereas the die-hard eee fan-boys won’t be budged.

Watch this space!

Wind NetbookIt’s June 27th, but instead of hearing a spanking new 10 inch MSI Wind netbook unboxing we’re now hearing that at least one pre order customer is being greeted with another delay. Reason? An “industry wide battery shortage.” Come on MSI, we guess you missed that giant fireball of a signal to look elsewhere for your inventory back in March? However, at least MSI are tossing in free overnight delivery with the new July 7th ship date. Hurrahh!!!

P.S. The MSI Wind MB retail page is currently blank. Time will tell if this is a deeper issue or just a temporary admin glitch.

Dear Customers:

We are writing today to apologize for the delays surrounding the shipment of your MSI Wind NB. We had hoped we would have begun shipping units by now, but have been unable to do so due to the industry wide battery shortage. We can assure MSI is doing everything possible to work around this issue and get your unit shipped.

As estimated, the first shipment will arrive in the week of July 7 and we will upgrade your shipping to overnight service without any extra cost to you.

We can only ask for your continued patience and apologize for any inconvenience this delay may have caused.

Please feel free to contact us at the numbers below if you have any questions or concerns.
