Acer’s Aspire One has an 8.9in screen and runs an Intel Atom CPU. It’s 24cm wide and 17cm deep, yet it’s reasonably comfortable to use, and best of all, its underbelly barely gets warm, so you can use it on your lap without feeling the heat.
The Aspire One is Acer’s first ‘netbook’ PC and it’s a computer for the Internet lifestyle. You can use it for browsing the Web, chatting online, streaming media, viewing photos and updating your social networking sites while you’re on the go. Initially, it will only be available with Linpus Linux-based interface that has been customised by Acer for ease of use — and it is very easy to use. You get free office applications, calendar and contacts functions, as well as online tools, but you won’t find any of the educational programs that are available on the Eee PC. A Windows XP version will be available in early August.
Its keyboard surprisingly comfortable to use and appears to be slightly bigger than the Eee PC’s keyboard. The touchpad does take a while to get used to, as its buttons are either side of the pad, just like the Mini-Note PC.
The red rings you can see on the unit are just for show. The glossy style of the Aspire One fits in with the rest of Acer’s Aspire line-up. It’s made out of hard plastic and feels very solid to the touch. You can see the Sapphire Blue unit in the foreground, while the Seashell White is in the background. Golden Brown, Coral Pink and Black will also be available.
On the left-hand side, you get D-Sub, 10/100 Ethernet, USB 2.0 and, most interestingly, an SD expansion slot. This dedicated slot can be used to expand the unit’s storage capacity. Acer has tested it with SD cards up to 16GB. On the Linux version, using Smart File Management this capacity can be merged with the existing hard drive or flash-based drive and treated one large drive. Currently, the internal storage choices are either an 8GB solid-state drive for the Linux version, or an 80GB conventional hard drive for the Windows XP version. Acer says the larger drive comes with the Windows version as users will want to install more applications and store more files than on the Linux version. The Windows XP version will also ship with 1.5GB of RAM, while the Linux version will have just 512MB (plus an empty slot if you wish to upgrade).
On the right-hand side, you get microphone and headphone ports, two more USB 2.0 ports, another SD card slot, which can be used to transfer photos off your memory cards, and a Kensington lock facility.
The rear of the unit is port-less, but you can see the large, 6-cell battery sticking out. With this battery, Acer claims the Aspire One will last over seven hours, while the standard 3-cell battery that ships with unit will supply over three hours. With the 3-cell battery installed the Aspire One weighs under 1kg, but with the 6-cell it tips the scales at just over 1kg. You also get 802.11g networking built-in and in the fourth quarter Acer will also release a version with built-in 3G connectivity. The Linux version with an 8GB SSD drive and 512MB of RAM costs $599, while the Windows XP version with 80GB hard drive and 1.5GB of RAM is a bargain at $699. Both units come with a 1-year pick-up and return warranty, and they are covered internationally (you’ll need to go to an authorised Acer service centre).

Two questions: 1) What about the warranty by adding additional RAM? 2) Is the Acer’s display a glossy or an opal/matt one? Thx al lot!
July 6th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
Confused.
Other sites have reported that the onboard memory on the Acer is not upgradeable - can someone help clarify this as its a major blocking point in my decision to buy one.
July 9th, 2008 at 7:49 am
I just bought one in Thailand (and am typing on it). The Acer support office told me that if I purchase RAM and bring it in to the service center, they’ll upgrade it for me at no cost.
July 11th, 2008 at 6:57 am
Two questions:
(1). Can I boot from USB, for example to boot Linux LiveCD using external CD-ROM or to boot with Linux LiveUSB?
(2). The price for 8GB SSD Linux is $599? Is this in USD (US Dollars)?
August 6th, 2008 at 10:28 am
to clarify things… i’ve bought one, and the fact is the onboard memory is soldered into mainboard and just has a slot to put some sodim ddr2 up to 1GB memory into it. the LCD panel is glossy one. in general… this model sux. why? first of all what if some onboard ram module decides to die?
second, ssd performance is very poor. if i were you i would look at msi’s wind or asus eee 900 series.
August 6th, 2008 at 10:30 am
P.S. Yes you can boot from USB.

PLEASE DON’T BUY! I just got my Aspire One few days ago and the mouse pad stop working already. The dealer told me I can upgrade the memory to 1.5GB and forgot to tell me I have to take the unit apart because the Acer engineer forgot to put a memory upgrade trap door under the laptop. When I contacted the Acer Tech Support, I was told by the level-2 support call George (Sept. 2, 2008 7:45PM EST) that there is no Aspire One memory upgrade program in place. He said Acer does not recommend field upgrade (translation – upgrade memory yourself) for Aspire One and I will have to pay for the parts if I damaged the computer while upgrading the memory. When I asked him why Acer did not post this information on their web site and he told me he is not responsible for the company site. He also suggested I should write to Acer America to voice my concerns (translation – complain).

Thanks “My First and Last Acer”, I was considering buying a Aspire One. However, in the past I purchased a Acer Travel mate. I really liked the computer, however the acer support was absolutely terrible. So not suprised that the same rubbish and lack of information is in place for the the Aspire one. Think I will stay with somewhat heavy ( but excellent technical support) Lenevo

This computer is awesome for the price. I’ve owned 4 low end Acer notebooks that I specifically purchased as a backup and/or road computer (that I wouldn’t care if it got ran over or stolen). After 5 years or so, all of these Acers are still running fine and none of the components failed. Only the batteries have weakened, ie. on the 5 year old one that only lasts 10 minutes on a full charge. No big deal. People who complain needs to realize that this thing is only $350 and you’re getting a ton of features. Most of the failures are due to USER ERROR. Downloading illegal, cracked software with viruses and trojans and then installing them. Don’t lie. You know you do it. Tech support probably sucks no doubt, b/c they’re selling it at cut throat prices. Or maybe you got a lemon for real. Sucks for you. Mine is fine.
If you want someone to hold your hand every step of the way, by all means, go to Dell and also buy their best On-Site support contract. Or a Sony Vaio. Otherwise, take this Aspire One for what it is…..a very decent $350 subnotebook.
November 11th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
I bought an Acer Aspire One (AAO) this fall and within weeks the screen blacked out upon booting. Rather than replacing my AAO , Acer referred me to a technical repair depot. After 6 weeks still no word - then two weeks ago after calling Acer they said they would send me a new one on “back-order” - still no sight of it. Today when i called they said they have no idea when the “back-order” will be filled. Just wonderful customer support - not! Wish i had bought a MacBook now…..
November 17th, 2008 at 3:04 am
Recently upgraded my AAO to 1.5 gigs, and if you think it was zippy before, you should see it now! Man oh man, Vista ran good on 1 gig but now with 1.5 and a few software tweaks it runs at the same level as XP but with the Aero interface [yes it works, you have to go download graphics drivers off intel.com] and the benefit of having the most up to date OS available. The sound through the sound card is BEAUTIFUL, the speakers arent too shabby, they sound good, just distort at high sounds. But the sound card is a BEAST, you can change the hardware’s EQ directly on the Realtek HD software, and when you get everything set, it sounds amazing. Graphics are OK too, can run Halo at medium to high settings at a lower resolution with great FPS [around 40 FPS] All in all this is the best thing ive ever bought in my life.
December 13th, 2008 at 1:05 am
Can amnyone give me a phone number for the Acer Aspire One technical support? I have looked everywhere and have not been able to locate one.
Thanks very much

Acer does not publish its warranty. My screen broke within the first month I bought the computer. I went on the website to see about getting this fixed. The page dealing with returns allows you to choose cracked screen as an option, and then directs you to send the computer to Acer. No limitations on screen replacement are listed, and no cost is listed, you’re just directed to send the computer in. I went ahead and sent the computer. Today I got a call saying the cracked screen isn’t covered by warranty, and that the replacement cost is TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS, more than half the price of the computer (currently going for about $350). I now hate Acer.
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:55 am
I love my acer aspire one (xp, 120 gig hd, 512 ram). I actually took mine apart to see what it looked like “under the hood.” Upgrading the ram and hard drive seems easy enough. (especially compared to upgrading the hard drive on an old ibook.) I haven’t had any major problems with mine. The only thing I really needed to buy for it was a slim external dvd writer for 45 bucks. It works like a charm. If there was one thing not to like about the machine, it would be the screen resolution. Handbrake requires 1024 by 720, and with the acer being 1024 by 600, it doesn’t work. It’s a small inconvenience, though, and there’s always my mac to run handbrake on.
Peace and happy computing!

After 3 months my screen broke (no idea how and why); I did not drop it or anything along those lines. More than half of the screen is covered by vertical lines. I sent it to ACER, assuming it was covered udner warranty, but was told, it’s a cracked screen and not covered. Repair is 200.00. I’ve been unable to find any kind of warranty information online.
Seems mighty suspicious. Anybody else have a similar experience?
February 2nd, 2009 at 7:49 pm
I have the same problem. I never dropped my acer, yet half the screen has lines running down it. I just sent it into acer today and hoping they will come back with good news. If i dont get news they will be hearing from me.
February 6th, 2009 at 7:44 am
Vertical lines are not caused by a cracked LCD it is a BAD LCD. I have seen LCD’s damaged when people have left pencils on the keyboard and they look like they are cracked and the damage is black and if bad enough will look runny since it is a liquid in the center. Hang tough because white vertical lines is not damage.
February 6th, 2009 at 7:46 am
Great video compared to some of the laptops I have had to get into this one looks pretty simple…Thanks
February 9th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
Follow-up on cracked screen (see above) Well, they sent my Acer Aspire One back, and NOW it does have an internal crack where the lines are diverted (i.e. not vertical anymore). In addition, there are also now horizontal lines across the whole screen where the crack is. I was told that the crack just became ‘visible’ over time. There are more complaints about Acer Aspire One now on the Internet about cracked screens, even though people did not abuse them.
February 12th, 2009 at 11:20 am
Our school has just recently purchased 200+ of these units, and now only two weeks into use we already have three cracked screens. Each of the students claims to have treated the units with care (very trustworthy students). I noticed that on all of the units with broken screens there is a faint slightly raised line in the centre of the top cover that runs parallel with the battery pack. This line can only be seen when you reflect light off the top casing, and it does not appear on all of the units. I would be interested to hear more from anyone else who has had similar experiences.
February 16th, 2009 at 5:19 am
My gf was also taking good care of the aspire one I gave her for xmas, a perfectly centered vertical pink line just appeared on it, will send it in to the authorized acer service center here in Costa Rica, I´ll reply with the results in a couple days.
February 18th, 2009 at 12:01 am
(RESPONSE TO-MY FIRST AND LAST ACER)
There is the chance that your mousepad died on you Acer. Another logical explanation is that you pressed Fn+F7, this disables the mousepad.
February 26th, 2009 at 11:49 pm
Another cracked screen. I’ve had no joy with accer or comet where i brought it from. I feel like i’ve been robbed. It makes me sick. What else can i do.
March 1st, 2009 at 10:04 am
I bought a Acer Aspire One for my teenage daughter for xmas and within 6 weeks of her using it the screen stopped working and had like cracked lines in the lcd screen and this happened while it was being used and wasnt from it being dropped or banged or anything, it was always looked after well. So I rang ACER and they asked me to send it to them so did and then a week later got a bill for £140 to pay within a week stating that this damage was not covered under their warranty. They also said that if we dont pay for the repair they will send the notebook back unrepaired and would still charge us £40 for delivery!!! We are fumming and are trying argue the point with them and at the moment we have had no luck!!! Can anybody advise where we stand legally as we are going to try and take it further especially after reading that many others seem to be experiencing the same problem with the Aspire ones screen!!
March 3rd, 2009 at 3:35 pm
Mine’s also cracked for unknown reasons. One moment it worked perfectly, the other moment I came back to continue working it showed a ugly crack in the LCD screen. I called the Acer support. I payed 10 euro cent a minute to talk to a person who obviously used standard lines read from a computer. She told me to send the acer netbook in for a research and repair. After the send-in they would notify me what the problem was and, in case the don’t cover the problem, the costs for repairing the screen. I can also choose to not repair the netbook, however then i had to cover the research and transport costs of 50 euro.
After reading the comments i discovered that there is not ever a very slim chance that they would repair the LCD screen under warranty, even when the damage is outside of your fault. So if i choose to send the netbook i would be left for the choice of about 200 euro for a repaired netbook OR 50 euro for the same netbook with a broken LCD.
really really crappy service and support from Acer…
March 9th, 2009 at 9:24 am
Thank you so much to Jon for your comment. I have recently moved from using a Mac to an Acer because it is so much more portable. But I had turned the trackpad off by hitting Function + F7. I am here because I thought my trackback was broken! Very happy it’s not! Thanks again.
March 18th, 2009 at 4:15 am
I tipped my Acer Aspire One laptop over and it fell on my carpeted floor from about 5 inches above. It now has lines going from top to bottom. I, just purchased it less than 2 months ago, so I called Acer. They told me to send it in and basically, wait to see, if they will fix it for free. I think these are made of something very cheap. There should be a recall or class action suit against them.
March 20th, 2009 at 9:56 pm
Any more info on cracked screens? I’m collecting others’ experience since this whole thing seems mighty suspicious.
March 25th, 2009 at 4:23 am
ive never had trouble with acer before however this is only my second computer and my first computer was purchased about ten years ago thanks for the posts i will be wary of the cracked screen farse in the future if it happens to me other than that im perfectly happy the wifi works great 1gig ram xp and 160 gig hd

April 1st, 2009 at 4:44 pm
my acer screen is cracked too, from a light drop that other computers would have withstood. I support a CLASS ACTION SUIT against them!!
April 8th, 2009 at 6:23 am
I got a new Acer One last week and tonight I touched the screen pretty gently .. nothing that should have caused any damage to the screen.. I now have a black spot of about 2 dimes in area with a crack down it.. I am really upset especially after reading about all the other people’s issues and Acer not standing behind its product.
If they even try to tell me I caused this and I have to pay $200 for a new screen I am more than onboard for a class action lawsuit.
April 23rd, 2009 at 7:54 pm
Same here suc’s…
April 28th, 2009 at 3:35 am
Ahhh my acer screen is also broken!
I am currently on a university exchange in Europe and got the acer aspire one at the end of January. I chose the netbook principally (after the cost) because I travel a LOT over here and wanted something light and durable for this purpose. It survived other voyages, including a plane trip to Dublin and other abuses. However last week, I had it in a travel backpack, carefully packed up as usual with its slip case and clothes packed around it (and of course being very careful with the pack as usual when it’s got computer equipment in it), opened it and found a great ugly writhing crack across the centre of the screen, with a nice leaf-shaped black, green and yellow scar in the middle.
My parents (who bought the computer from canada for me) called acer and were told the warranty would not fix it; this computer is 4 months old and I’m very disappointed. There’s no way to fix the screen for less than $200?
April 29th, 2009 at 12:57 am
3 and 1/2 month old Acer netbook died. Acer said it is a software issue. I asked for copy of warranty and person with not good English said I had the warranty. I have every last piece of wrapping that came with it and only extended warranty that ShopNBC gave free in box. I had to charge $25 to get a CD and DVD and go buy a device to connect to Acer and try to reinstall system. Acer said software only covered for 90 days and I was 12 days over. With no warranty in hand what do I know, Not a it impressed with Acer anymore. I was a mac gal and what was I thinking when I got this?
May 11th, 2009 at 5:31 pm
for everyone who has had a cracked lcd, what have you done about it? our organization bought one to evaluate and a crack developed in the lcd rendering it unusable. acer of course stated it will not cover cracked lcd screens. there was of course no abuse. the laptop worked fine one day and then when powered on the next day there was the crack. the laptop at this point had not been moved. simply powered off then powered on. so it looks like a defect to me.
May 16th, 2009 at 3:25 am
I got my acer while in texas and brought it with me on my deployment. a couple of my buddies also bought the same computers. 2 out of the four of us now have broken screens. mine has a green and black line going thru the screen. any idea on where to get a screen cheaper then $200?
June 5th, 2009 at 5:46 pm
Bought FOUR of these for the family for Christmas. 1 sitting on a shelf in a room unused for about a month. When turned on, it now is cracked. ACER won’t cover. Now dreading the inevitable cracking of the other 3!
June 9th, 2009 at 8:57 pm
Cracked my screen (my fault) and just ordered a replacement on ebay (under $50). If my replacement works, I’ll post the details!
June 13th, 2009 at 4:04 am
I purchased my netbook in November 2008. Went to use it tonight after not having used it for four days and there is a large black spot in the upper left corner of the screen with 5 cracks, then another 1″ thick black line in the upper middle of the screen. This netbook was never dropped. The screen was fine the last time it was used.
June 24th, 2009 at 3:50 am
my acer one lcd screen crack 3 weeks after i bought it. i dont even remember closing it hard for the night or anything bt the next morning it was cracked. i protested but they said 200 bucks to fix. total crap!

I had a 2 hours driving from East Bay, in San Francisco area, to Big Sur, California. The Acer one mini laptop was put in suitcase, in its own sleeve, padded with clothes. When openning the mini laptop after reaching the destitination, I found that there are a 3 way crack on the LCD screen and also has two two thumb sized black spots on the screen. The suitecase was in the car trunck during the trip and there was no pressure pressed on the suitecase. I just couldn’t understand how the lcd got craked. My daughter’s Sony laptop was placed on the car floor wihtout any protection, and it has no issue in the whole trip. I found ebay selling the LCD screen for $45 with shipping included. After reading so much about Acer’s service online, I decide to have a try on ebay.
July 28th, 2009 at 12:48 am
I did drop my acer and now have a cracked screen. I was browsing for parts when i came across all of these posts. I am discouraged about repair. I am interested to see if anyone has discovered an inexpensive fix.
August 3rd, 2009 at 5:51 pm
according to acer opening and closing the lcd display caused the lcd to crack. it is considered abuse by acer and they will not cover it. i think we need send all of our cracked crappy netbooks to the executives of this crappy company that won’t stand by their defective.
August 6th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
Another cracked LCD screen, with gentle use. Acer refuses to honor warranty.
August 7th, 2009 at 5:38 pm

I’m looking for a website to register my new ace aspire one which I bought few days ago. Can anyone guide me where to registerd my acer as to elligible for one year warranty.
September 3rd, 2009 at 3:24 am
I have an Acer Aspire one, with XP, 160 GB HD, and the memory upgraded to 1.5 GB. I had a problem where it would go through phases of shutting off hard at random, and then start up and shutdown a few minutes later. Leave it for a while and it would work fine like nothing was wrong. I could not figure out for the life of me why it do thi, but recently it started doing it again. Except this time I observed the fan was not running. I poked the heatsink/fan unit with a toothpick ( I improvised an airflow vent), and it started up fine, with the fan running. It took a long time to isolate the problem, and I know that Acer’s tech support would never figure this out. I’ll pick up a new heatsink unit sometime. I never had any problem with the screen, however.
September 11th, 2009 at 2:59 am
Thanksfor all the comments about cracked screens and Acer’s denial of a problem. I will certainly not purchase one now.
September 18th, 2009 at 4:04 am
Interesting. Just pulled up your blog post doing a search for XP repair.
I like XP but it can be tough to fix sometimes. (But it is still easier for me to understand than NT!)
Thanks for posting.
September 24th, 2009 at 4:27 am
Turned on Acer Aspire one today and nothing. Removed battery for few minutes, replaced, still no response. Just a black screen.
September 24th, 2009 at 4:28 am
Does anyone have any info or help?
September 28th, 2009 at 6:00 am
I too am now the proud owner of an Acer Aspire with a broken screen. From what I am seeing in the above comments, I will not spend too much time chasing Acer (although it must be said they have been very good about my Ferrari 5000).
If someone discovers a link showing the screen replacement process, I would be interested in trying it. I see i can get one for less than 90$ shipped to my house. Can’t be that hard to replace the screen…..
October 15th, 2009 at 7:57 pm
cracked acer! screen
looks like a genericproblem!
I am going to call them tomorrow and kick up a fuss!
using this site(and others)as evidence!
November 9th, 2009 at 7:22 pm
Bought an Acer Aspire ONE (AOA 150) April 2, 2009 to use with my son who is autistic. This netbook was perfect for him because he is a child and you know children have little fingers:-) He loved using it as I used social skills websites to help him with communication. I have NEVER left him alone with the computer as I had to help him with the instructions for the website. During one of our “friends” time I opened the laptop to find a barely visible crack behind the cover screen. When I turned it on the screen was white and the crack was very visible. Of course my son was devistated because we could not play his game. After reviewing the website and following the instructions I spent an additional $50 to send it Next Day Air via UPS. The cracked screen was listed on the website and my system was under warranty until 4/2/10. Once the computer arrived I received a call back in about two days stating that cracked screens were not covered and that if I wanted it fixed I would have to pay $200+. I was also told that if I did not want it fixed I would have to pay additional charges in shipping fees to get it back! I could barely afford to get this one and I definately can’t afford another one. Thanks a lot ACER. Since you have no heart I know you will sleep very well tonight.

Got another winner here…Acer with cracked screen.
Someone get a lawyer please!!!!
December 1st, 2009 at 7:12 pm
I am not liking what I’m hearing on here at all. I have an Acer Aspire One and in the Three months I have had it, it has decided that the mouse pad doesn’t need to work. At all. I have a wireless mouse so no big deal right? Wrong. Every time i move the mouse it changes the Screen %. 10% to 1000% and everywhere in between. The key board has also stopped working and I am about ready to call it a total loss. For shame Acer. I never even got to know If you were really any good. But on the other hand the screen is still in good working order. I guess I dodged that bullet. For now. Anyone having this same problem with there netbook? Anyone know of an easy to moderately difficult way to remedy this problem? Thanks all. Sounds like maybe a recall might be in the air.

December 11th, 2009 at 9:42 pm
Cracked screen here too. I don’t even know how or why it cracked. I am very discouraged.
December 12th, 2009 at 6:52 am
I too have an Acer Aspire One with a cracked screen. I think we should start a class action lawsuit. I sent my netbook in for repair and had to pay postage to them to find out that the cracked screen was not covered and was quoted a repair charge of $139. I have seen other posts where people were quoted repair charges of up to $350, why is there no standard charge.
I contacted the Better Business Bureau and found out that Acer has an F rating for complaints. They are not willing to resolve this issue. I think that we should start a class action lawsuit to get the machines repaired or get our money back.
For those who are with me, first contact the Better Business Bureau and file a complaint and then contact me acercrackedscreen@live.com so that we can form a plan of action.

Another Acer here with cracked screen for no apparent reason. This will be the last Acer I buy.

January 10th, 2010 at 12:49 pm
Cracked screen! Don’t know how it happened. Warranty doesn’t cover it.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:19 pm
Hey everyone…Don’t get too excited about the screen cracking…you can replace it easily and inexpensively. I have been using mine for a yeat or two and it is a great little machine. I racked the screen by letting it get under a chair I was rocking on. You can google a replacement screen and get one for a little over $53.00. (delivered) You can also google how to replace it, but it is “See spot run” easy. This little machine is great for people on the move, limited space, and students. The trade off is the small screen. Us old folks have to squint a little, or change our settings to “large fonts”! Also, I would worry about the expansion of the memory. I purchased the ACER ASPIRE ONE netbook 8” for my daughter last year March. she had hardly been able to use it as it’s been slow and constantly checking for disk inconsistency which I’ve been told I’m not the only user to encounter the issue.
Now, recently, the screen became white with few stripes on the right corner. It is still under warranty and I have even purchased the extension 2 years warranty.
I have sent it back for repair at ACER via there DHL service.
I find it extremely dishonest that they now send me a £95 quotation cost for repair pretending the damage is ‘accidental’ and therefore not covered by the warranty pretending originally the poor quality of the packaging, revising their position once I told them I used the original packaging + bubble raping.
I am pursuing my complaint further as I find this attitude extremely dishonest.
